Classic Army CA33E: A Love Story in the Making February 3, 2006

The first time I laid my eyes on an image of the CA33E, I knew deep down that I had to have one.

Real Steel HK33

Let me give you a backgrounder. You see, during those days, I was still lingering in that “love-hate” stage with my CA MP5A4. It’s that certain stage in an airsoft relationship when you get to know your gun well enough to be able to take its quirks with the “here-we-go-again” attitude, but you start longingly gazing at your teammate’s new, shiny AEG and having dirty thoughts of holding it by your side as you sleep… It was in this juncture of my relationship with “El Gato Negro” (my MP5) that I “accidentally” stumbled upon a review of the CA33E. There it was, right before my eyes, sleek, seductive, calling out my name. I could not find any valid excuse that would ruin its reputation in my eyes. For days I searched and trawled through the net, hoping to find a major fault, a flaw in its manufacturing, a sob story involving the CA33E. All I found were little kinks, minor, acceptable, liveable with.

It was at that point that I decided to part ways with the MP5. I lovingly cleaned, oiled, caressed it for the last time, and packed it back into its box. I said goodbye and sent it the way of the buyer, with wishes for a better relationship, and a long, battle-ridden life. It was painful, but yes, it was also time to move on. The MP5 and I had been having some domestic spats lately, including some failure on its part to spit out some BBs when prompted, and now, in retrospect, it seems that we were really destined to part.

Well, with that out of the way, I moved on to searching for a reliable gun-running bloke that could make my airsoft fantasy a reality. After looking under some rocks, I found him and placed my order, but the wait slowed my heart a little each day until it was ready to “cease its endless tides”, in the words of the beloved poet Khalil Gibran. I kept messaging, emailing, calling to find out whether “Chastity” had arrived. Oh, yes, I had named her even before she arrived. “Chastity”, for she was here to chastise the enemy with her 330 stock fps.

The day she arrived, I was on duty until 11:00pm, yet I called my gun-runner and made sure that he would stay up, for I would swing by and collect her, not wanting anyone else to touch and taint her. As I got down from my car and strolled down the dark alley towards my gun-runner’s house, my hands were clammy, and a million thoughts were racing through my head, “did I make a mistake?”, “is it worth it?”, “what if it doesn’t perform the way it should?”… The next thing I remember was opening the box. I can swear that I heard Handel’s “Messiah” playing somewhere in the background…

There she lay, in all her magnificence, cold to the touch, modest in her lines, yet wanting to be touched, nay, to be fired. It was an error on my part to include my last battery pack with the sale of the MP5, as I had nothing to power dear Chastity with for the next few days. All I could do was polish her, follow her lines with my fingers, and peek into her box five times a day. The day came when I could finally afford her power source, and was quick to charge it, not even caring if I may have botched up the battery by rushing it on its maiden charge. I had to stop my fingers from shaking as I slipped the battery into its place, and fired Chas for the first time.

There could be no sweeter sound in the airsoft world than the first “thwack” of your most beloved, brand new baby, and in this regard, the CA33E did not disappoint. It was pure music to my ears, and when I clicked her selector to full auto and depressed the trigger, it was Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 9″ coupled with a steady stream of BBs that made me realize that it was Chastity and Me against the world…

To be continued.
