I was fortunate enough to get a hold of the Classic Army M15A4 CQB for the weekend, thanks to a friend who was enthusiastic enough about the gun to actually want to have it reviewed in order to spread the good word about it.

Classic Army M15A4 CQB

First Impressions

The first thing I noticed about the gun was how rock solid the thing was. No creaking or wobbling present throughout the length of the gun. Given the length and compactness of the gun, it was quite hefty, weighing in at 3kg without the battery. The overall feel of it is much like its real steel counterpart, especially with the battery in place, since you can even hold it just by the barrel, lift the gun to the horizontal position and shake it a bit without any noticeable squeak or wobble. The strength and weight might be attributable to the fact that most of the gun is made of metal, with the exception of the pistol grip, vertical fore grip, sliding crane stock and two included rail covers.

Based on the name of the gun alone, we know that the receiver type is of the A4 flat-top kind, on top of which we find the Special Forces rear sight. These are modeled after the sights the SF custom made for their rifles by cutting the front portions of their carry handle off. This gave them the freedom to have an adjustable rear sight but still use it in conjunction with a holographic sight such as an EOtech or Aimpoint without the need for rail systems that often came loose with normal carry handle setups. Two minor disappointments though, are the lack of the “T” marks on the rail, (which help you to quickly and properly re-install your sights) and the fact that when the charging handle is pulled, the dust cover doesn’t automatically pop open. These are a very minor issues, and are quite neglectable if you are looking at the bigger picture.

The genuine Armalite Inc. laser-etched trademarks and unique serial number make you feel that this baby is the real thing!

Things You’ll Love About the Gun

One great improvement is on the two metal pins that hold the upper and lower receivers together. For them to be removed, one needs an allen wrench, as you cannot just tap the pins out. Why is this great? Well, if I had a dollar for every time my friends and I had to pop out our taclights and search around our CQB Warehouse in the dark, through all the construction materials piled high, for a metal pin… It’s literally trying to find a needle in a haystack! Anyway, once you have taken the pins off with the help of the allen wrench, the upper and lower parts come clean of each other like a dream.

The crane stock caresses your cheeks fully, and as such, gives you more control over the gun, as there is more surface contact with your face. The particular gun I was testing was sporting a 9.6v 3300mah battery, and as such the rate of fire was totally wicked. Needless to say, this baby can go through a bag of BBs faster than you can scream “HIT!”. Back to the crane stock, it is the only part of the gun that feels “plasticky”, although, once again, this does not affect the overall feel, and once the battery is in place, the distribution of weight and balance of the gun feels as it should.

Firing the gun is pure bliss, the sound of the gun is music to my ears and the accuracy leaves nothing to luck. The range is in no way affected by the shorter barrel, and the hopup seems to be the new version produced by CA, and a very reliable one, I must add. All in all, I want to give this gun a perfect ten, except for the minor flaws enumerated above, that in no way affect its performance. To me it seems one of the most reliable airsoft weapons on the market, and for a little more premium than the competitors, you get a fully upgraded product that will not only get you through the next skirmish, but will get you there in style.

My fireteam member uses this weapon. Last weekend (2/4/06) in our CQB training he made an incredible shot to a Hostage Taker that was leaning over a rail. Did I mention the HT was 4 1/2 stories up? and incredible weapon!!
